A ship has sunk in the Red Sea days after it was attacked by Yemen's Houthi rebels, officials said Saturday, the first vessel to be completely destroyed as part of Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Rubimar was moving north after being struck on February 18 in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital waterway connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Yemen's internationally recognized government and a regional military official confirmed the sinking. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was not authorized to be released.
Rubimar's Beirut-based manager could not immediately be reached for comment.
Yemen's government-in-exile, which has been backed by the Saudi-led coalition since 2015, said the Rubymar sank late Friday due to stormy weather in the Red Sea.
The ship was abandoned for 12 days after the attack, although efforts were made to tow the ship to a safe port.
The Iran-backed Houthis, who claimed the ship sank almost immediately after the attack, did not immediately acknowledge the sinking.
