Stop and Shop temporarily closes deli counters amid multi-state listeria outbreak – NBC New York

Amid a multi-state listeria outbreak and the recall of some pig’s head products, Stop and Shop said Friday it was conducting a “deep clean” of its deli departments and throwing out the affected products.

Boar’s Head announced Friday that it is recalling more than 200,000 pounds of liverwurst and other deli meat products because they may be contaminated with listeria, which can cause fatal infections in vulnerable people. says the FDA.

This year, with a listeria outbreak that killed two people, one of them a New Jerseyan, and dozens more in 13 states, officials say they are investigating whether the contamination is linked. As of July 25, the CDC has reported a total of 34 illnesses related to the outbreak. All but one of those cases required hospitalization.

“Due to CDC/USDA continuing to investigate possible contamination of some deli meats, our supplier Pork’s Head has informed us that they are recalling some deli meat products. Stop & Shop is in the process of removing all affected products from sale,” Stop & Shop said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are in the process of deep cleaning the deli, rejecting all open deli meats and cheeses that were cut or prepared in the same area as this product was cut in-store. As always, ensuring the safety of the products we sell is our highest priority.”
