An investigation has been launched into the death of seven people who drowned in the sea.
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah died along with Morgan Stanley International Bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas. , who worked as a cook on a boat.
All their bodies have now been recovered.
Ambrogio Cardozio, chief prosecutor of Termini Imeris, said his office had opened a preliminary investigation into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.
He told reporters that they would ascertain whether the captain, crew, persons in charge of watch, the shipbuilder or others could be held responsible.
He added: “We will establish responsibility for each element – that will be done through an investigation, so we cannot do it prematurely.
“For me, crimes may have been committed – it could be a homicide – but we can only establish that if you give us time to investigate.
“The media’s time is completely different from the lawyer’s time. We need a minimum amount of time to reach a sound scientific conclusion.”
The investigation is currently an Italian investigation with local involvement, but Mr Cardozio said: “I cannot say for sure that the investigation will be exclusively Italian.
“There will be improvements on that score, I’m sure.”
