Lady Gaga Wears Harley Quinn in ‘Joker 2’ Set Photos – Variety

What’s funnier than a clown? How about two? Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is going to have some criminal enterprise for Lady Gaga’s sequel “Folly à Deux” for her role as Batman villain Harley Quinn. New photos from the production have surfaced, revealing Gaga’s outfit and makeup for the film.

The photos show a scene of a large crowd as Gotham police officers escort Gaga’s character into a government building. Protesters gathered around the star dressed as protesters holding signs with messages such as “Free Joker,” “Justice 4 Joker,” “Joker Marry Me” and “No Justice Not Guilty Not Joking.” The crowd features colorful wigs and clown masks.

Gaga’s costume, by Oscar-nominated Arianne Phillips, undercuts the heightened sensibilities of the comic book source material and the gritty aesthetic of the first “Joker” movie. While it’s still not officially confirmed that Gaga will be playing Harley Quinn, the crimson jacket and diamond-print blouse will definitely suggest romance among detractors, not to mention the clown makeup on Gaga’s face.

This isn’t the first glimpse of Gaga from the set of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” On Valentine’s Day, director Todd Phillips shared a photo of Gaga and Phoenix in a romantic embrace. While these new photos feature a different look of Gaga’s character, the official image was a tight close-up.

Phillips’ original “Joker” was a commercial smash, the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. At the 2020 Academy Awards, the film scored two wins – Phoenix for Best Actor and Hildur Gunadottir for Best Original Score – out of 11 nominations. Speculations about a sequel quickly took hold.

While the landscape of DC Comics has changed dramatically in recent months, “Joker 2” remains largely untouched by the newly formed DC Studios and its co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. The “Joker” sequel will not play a role in the story continuity of other upcoming DC films.

Warner Bros. will release “Joker: Folly Dukes” in theaters on October 9, 2024.
