The day India has been waiting for over six weeks after voting across the world’s largest democracy: the results of a general election that could chart the country’s path for the next five years and beyond.
Narendra Modi, India’s most powerful political figure in a generation, is set to serve a third consecutive term as prime minister, becoming only the second Indian leader to achieve the feat.
In the months leading up to the election, Mr. About three dozen opposition parties have joined together in a grand coalition called the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance, or India, hoping to pool their votes for a strong fight against Modi’s powerful Bharatiya Janata Party. Or the BJP and its alliance, the National Democratic Alliance or the NDA

As a man who marches India home and abroad, Mr. Modi presented himself to the electorate. His opponents warned that his continued leadership would put India’s democratic and secular foundations at grave risk.
When the results come in, Mr. Indians will be watching the trends of Modi’s BJP closely, as in the previous election, in 2019, the party won a majority, winning 303 seats to just 52 seats for the main opposition Indian National Party. Congress.
Mr. To mount a serious challenge to Modi, the Congress party will have to dramatically improve its performance in this election.
The BJP has set an even higher target for the 2024 elections. But the newly united opposition coalition hopes to keep the BJP under its target of 400-plus seats in the lower house of parliament or reduce its majority.
