The Kansas City Chiefs are doing their part to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC, leading the Las Vegas Raiders 24-3 at halftime. Patrick Mahomes was 14 of 17 for 175 yards in the first half, rushing for 16 yards. It also gave him the most total yards in a season in NFL history. Mahomes passed Drew Brees for the all-time passing mark (Brees had 5,562 in 2011).
Travis Kelce also passed his own single-season receiving yards record among tight ends (1,416) by 96 yards. Kelce had three catches for 21 yards in the first half.
The Chiefs went ahead early with a 67-yard pass from Mahomes to Justin Watson on the second play of the game. Mahomes found McKinnon for a two-yard score to give Kansas City a 7-0 lead with 2:02 left. Katarious Toney capped a 98-yard scoring drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to push Kansas City’s lead to 21-3 with 49 seconds left in the first half. Toney leads the Chiefs with 26 rushing yards. Ronald Jones also had a two-yard score in the first half for Kanas City.
The Raiders have some milestones to play for, as Josh Jacobs could become the first Raiders player since Marcus Allen in 1985 to win a league rushing title. Davante Adams broke the franchise’s reception record by 11 catches (Darren Waller had 107 in 2020. ) and is two receiving touchdowns shy of tying the franchise receiving touchdowns record (Art Powell had 16 in 1963). Adams had two catches for 21 yards in the first half, while Jacobs had 10 catches for 20 yards.
