British Open third-round leaderboard, live updates: Justin Thomas blisters to start moving day Saturday

We’ve reached the midway point of the British Open and Shane Lowry is in full control of the leaderboard.

Lowry dropped to 7-under after his second-round 69 on Friday, giving him a two-shot lead over the field heading into the moving day at Royal Troon, Scotland. He had a leg up in the second round as the strong winds absolutely smashed the afternoon wave and sent many of the big names home early.

Leading after the first round, Daniel Brown shot a 1-over 72 on Friday. He’ll start the week at 5-under Saturday with Justin Rose, who matched the day’s low round of 3-under 68 on Friday. First trio from England and Ireland to lead the British Open at the midway point since 1951.

Top-ranked Scotty Scheffler will start the day at 2-under five shots behind Lowry. Scheffler, who has already won six times on the PGA Tour this season, is coming off a playoff win at the Travelers Championship.

  • Sometimes you just have to flip the club and do something

Robert MacIntyre plays left-handed, but to avoid the impossible situation of getting out of a bunker late in his third round, he chose to flip his club and go right-handed. He misses heavily on the right… but equalizes from this position.

  • Another birdie for JD

The two-time PGA Championship winner is -2 for the championship after another birdie at 12 and is 6-under for the day. That was his last win on the 2022 PGA Championship Tour, and his best finish yet again at the T11 Open in 2019.

  • Chi Woo Kim no. Makes a hole-in-one on 17

This is the 10th Open Championship played at Royal Troon, and no player has aceed the par-3 17th to date. Well, that number went from zero to one with Si Woo Kim’s hole-in-one in the third round. He’s at +5 for the match, a shot he’ll remember for life the day after. Check out:

  • DB World Tour star Tristan Lawrence also charges the leaderboard

Among the low scorers earlier in the day were the names we saw in the majors on Sundays…Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, but also Tristan Lawrence to name a few. South Africa’s 4-time winner on the DP World Tour is 6-under through his first 8 holes and up 24 spots on the leaderboard to finish in 4th place.

  • Sangje I make big moves on Saturday

One day SungJae Im! The 5-under 65 is at +1 for the championship, and if conditions deteriorate Saturday afternoon, it looks like he could be in for Sunday’s late tee times.

  • The weather at Royal Dune can be a factor in the day going

The morning groups in Round 3 dealt with much less wind than Friday and the scoring conditions were much better – Justin Thomas 4-under 7 – but that wouldn’t be the case all day. Groups may be affected by the end of the day with rain and some strong winds4pm local time/11pm ET.

  • Tiger Woods will miss the weekend

Tiger Woods missed the cut in Scotland this week and calls for him to be hanged for good are growing fast.

Woods, wrote Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports, “should continue to play all these tournaments as long as he wants to.” He earned it.
