British Open Round 2 Leaderboard, Scores: Shane Lowry leads after second-round 69 with cut line sitting around +5

After 18 holes of the final major championship of the year, we have a surprise at the top of the leaderboard in Scotland.

Daniel Brown, who entered the week ranked 273rd in the Official World Golf Rankings, took the overnight lead after a bogey-free 65 on Thursday at Royal Troon. Brown, who has a one-shot lead over Shane Lowry, is playing in his first major championship this week. He is the highest-ranked golfer to lead a major after the opening round since 2016.

With a bogey-free 66, Lowry is well placed to make a run at the midway point of the tournament. He won his first major championship at the 2019 Royal Portrush. Justin Thomas will start Friday at 3-under par alone, and the group of seven golfers is tied at 2-under par.

After their wild battle in North Carolina, neither Bryson DeCambe nor Rory McIlroy had a good start to their week in Scotland. DeChambeau opened with a 5-over 76, and McIlroy finished with a 7-over 78. They both need a run on Friday to make the cut, which McIlroy didn’t miss at the British Open. 2019.

Tiger Woods, as he has done so many times in recent years, fought back. Woods posted an 8-over 79 on Thursday, the seventh of his last 10 major championship starts to miss or withdraw.

  • Tiger finished his Open Championship at +14

15 majors and 3 British Opens have etched themselves into the collective consciousness of the golf world, and while his days of competing for the top of the leaderboards seem long gone, he still has a chance to become arguably the greatest player of all time. A part of major events is one that the world of golf still enjoys. Tiger Woods will miss the cut for the seventh time in his last 10 events – with the cut line projected at +5 – to finish at +14 for the championship after a 79-77.

  • Scheffler leads by three after 14

He has won 6 of his last 10 starts and is the hot player in the world, now at 2-under 14, making one of the few birdies of the day on No. 14. That red number came up eventually. A run of eight straight pars came against him in the second round at Royal Troon.

  • Lowry steadies the ship

After a tough double bogey on 11, Lowry remains atop the leaderboard after rolling three straight bogeys to stay at 5-under, where he joins Daniel Brown.

  • Tiger flaunts vintage shot making skills

Even though he had one of the worst championship performances of his career, the highlights we’ve seen for nearly three decades pop up from time to time with Tiger Woods, including this masterful shot on the 15th green.

  • Shane Lowry is back on the field

The magic ended for Shane Lowry in Royal Troon’s 11th on Friday. Holding a two-stroke lead, Lowry stepped up to the tee on the 11th… and put his shot into the thick Scottish rough. He has to take an unplayable lie and then he cuts the green. A double-bogey putt later, and Lowry fell back into a tie with Daniel Brown at -5. He’s still a co-leader in the Open, but with the wind blowing and a tough stretch of the course ahead, Lowry has his work cut out for him to bring it home.

  • John Daly withdrew from the Open Championship

Another past Open champion called it a week earlier – 1995 Open champion John Daly withdrew from this year’s tournament after one round, citing a knee injury. Daly and Ernie Els both shot +11 in the opening round of the tournament.

  • Leaderboard Update: Lori is back in the lead

A birdie on the 8th has once again given Shane Lowry the lead in the Open Championship. Everything is going Lori’s way now, and with the tricky weather, Lori will have a very relaxing Friday afternoon in bed.

    1. Shane Lowry, -7 (up to 8)
    2. Daniel Brown, -6 (3)
    3. Justin Thomas, -3 (7:53 a.m. ET tee time)
    T4. Xander Schauffele + Seven, -2

  • Tiger Woods birdies!

It’s a little sad when we get excited about Tiger Woods carding a birdie, but that’s where we are now. Woods rolled a long one on the par-5 6th. Ah, right.

  • Tough day for Scotty Scheffler’s caddy

Being sick at work is tough, and lugging a heavy bag through the mountains of Scotland at your job can be even tougher. Ted Scott, Scotty Scheffler’s caddy, struggles with something bad; When Scheffler was not actively swinging, he was said to be lying down. And with Scheffler only through four holes until 6:15 a.m. ET, Scott has a long way to go.

  • Ernie Els withdrew from the Open with an injury

Royal Troon takes out rivals one at a time in the 152nd Open. The latest to fall back: Ernie Els, 2002 and 2012 Open champion. Ells withdrew before the second round, citing a back injury.

On Thursday, Big Easy shot +11, finishing second to last on the day. Els has three wins as a member of the PGA Tour Champions this season and is currently listed in the field for next week’s Senior British Open.

Ells joins Romain Langaske, who withdrew Thursday after a poor, 84-yard tee shot on the famous postage stamp.

  • Shane Lowry immediately jumped to the lead

After just one hole, Shane Lowry is back in the lead. As far as Daniel Brown is concerned he is under 6 years old.

  • Tiger dropped 2 shots early

Well, Tiger Woods made double bogey at the second after missing the fairway and then missing the green well on his approach. He is now 10-under, several shots outside the initially projected cutline. Not the best start.

  • Weather forecast for Friday

I don’t think it will rain today in Royal Troon.

  • Tiger Woods takes the field in the second round

Tiger Woods and his team are now in the second round at Royal Troon. Woods posted an 8-over 79 on Thursday and will need a big round today to make the cut.

While it’s a familiar trend for the golf greats, there have been growing calls for him to hang it up, and Woods brushed them off earlier this week. Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports wrote that Woods “in all likelihood won’t win another tournament on the PGA Tour” and that he should play “as long as he’s enjoying himself.”
