Exclusive: the story of Acolyte No sequel, Lucasfilm did not want to pursue a second season Star Wars An offshoot starring Amandla Stenberg, sources say Deadline.
Word of the decision comes a month after the eight-episode series’ first season from creator, director, executive producer and showrunner Leslie Hedland ended its run on Disney+.
The news is not entirely surprising. Acolyte Rotten Tomatoes was OK with critics with a 78%, but divided Star Wars fans, and this was reflected in its overall audience.
Motivated by a passion for honorable ownership, Acolyte When it launched with two episodes on June 4, it earned 4.8M views in its first day on the streamer, ranking as the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year. After five days of streaming the number rose to 11.1 million views worldwide. Corroborating Disney’s data, the series ranked No. 7 on Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart in its premiere week (488 million minutes watched), and No. 6 the following week.
But Acolyte Couldn’t keep up the momentum, falling out of the top 10 in week 3 and stalling before returning to 10th after the release of the finale (335 million minutes, believed to be the lowest for a single. Star Wars series finale).
Like fellow global streamers Netflix and Prime Video, Disney+ has a high audience threshold for renewing high-end, big-budget series, which cost more than $100M per season.
